Dentist research project

Latest news

Learning Disability England is starting a new research project which will look at how going to the dentist can be made more accessible for people with a learning disability.

Learning Disability England’s new project, Caring Beyond Words, aims to make it easier for people with a learning disability to go to the dentist, so that they have a positive experience. This research is funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research.

The project will use creative methods to understand experiences. This means professionals like a creative writer or an artist will help people present their experiences.

The project will be run by a Co-Design Group, led by Learning Disability England. The Co-Design Group will support researchers to help design workshops for people with a learning disability and dentists who are taking part.

Learning Disability England is looking for 10 experts to join the Co-Design Group who have a learning disability. They are looking for people who have had good experiences at the dentist, or have struggled to receive good dental care, and who need reasonable adjustments. In this paid role, you will work with the research team, sharing your views, experience and ideas.

Meetings

There will be three meetings, with 2 in July and 1 in October. They will last for 2 hours each and will be online. Each person taking part will be paid £75 per session or you can choose to volunteer if you prefer. Learning Disability England wants to help everyone in the Co-Design Group take part as equal members. If you have accessibility or communication needs, you can let them know and they will agree with you how you can best work together.
