Learning Disability Week 17 – 23 June 2024

Latest news

With an estimated 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, Learning Disability Week is an opportunity to recognise the barriers that people with learning disabilities face. Every year, Learning Disability Week has been celebrated to help raise awareness and increase understanding of learning disabilities.

The theme for this year’s campaign is, "Do you see me?,” which is all about challenging the barriers people with a learning disability face. The focus this year is on celebrating the contribution people with a learning disability make to society. People with learning disabilities deserve to live full lives, reaching their potential and accessing the support that they need.

Someone with a mild learning disability may only need support with things like getting a job. Someone with a severe learning disability may need fulltime care and support with every aspect of their life, like communication and personal care. People with certain conditions can have a learning disability too. For example, people with Down’s syndrome and some autistic people can have a learning disability.

Many of our tenants have a learning disability and receive support from RWP housing officers, support workers, family, and friends. It is important that we are able to understand more about learning disabilities, support provided for our tenants in supported living, and the barriers faced by people with learning disabilities.

We’re supporting Mencap to raise awareness and increase understanding of learning disabilities. We will be sharing blogs from tenants and staff and helpful resources. You can watch our animated explainer about challenging barriers faced by people with learning disabilities.
