Lyndsey’s blog: “I can confidently use the CIH ethical decision-making framework to support with making good decisions.”

Latest news

In her blog, RWP Housing Officer Lyndsey discusses how she has been applying the knowledge she gained from studying for the level 5 Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) qualification to her role.

“I successfully completed the level 5 CIH qualification earlier this year. The CIH promotes good practice amongst the housing community by championing ethical working, how social housing should be performing, and what it should look like.

Strategic planning module

“The strategic business planning module was interesting. I had to write a report on the role of social housing providers, considering their social purpose and commercial challenges in the housing market. I also had to write about the British economy, poverty and where social housing fits into the wider picture, not just for providing housing but also providing support for the community. Lastly, I researched methods for strategic business planning and looked at one area of our organisation (RWP) and carried out a Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats (SWOT) analysis, identifying areas where we could improve our service and offer for customers.

Applying CIH knowledge to my role

“I have been able to use some of the learning from my course in some recent work which involved supporting the termination of several leases in Tameside and the arrangement of a new management agreement. The Ethical Practice module has helped me to understand the importance of tenant consultation for this process.

"I can also confidently use the CIH ethical decision-making framework to support with making good decisions, justifying and recording these for future reference; this has been useful in considering how to resolve anti-social behaviour and hoarding issues.

Professional development

"In the next month I will be taking part in a job shadowing exercise with a housing officer from another housing organisation. We are going to look at how they do annual reviews, and they will shadow me too, then we can compare and identify areas for learning and improvement. This will be a great opportunity to see how another organisation works and hopefully acquire some good ideas to use myself in my day-to-day work. I am also keeping an eye out for any more learning and development opportunities."
