Safeguarding conversations with RWP

Latest news

We recently engaged in safeguarding conversations with RWP caretaker Nigel, RWP housing officer Sarah, and Annette, Operations Director at RWP, about what safeguarding means to them, who they work in partnership with, and their approach to professional curiosity.

RWP caretaker Nigel shares the importance of asking questions and being brave in his safeguarding conversation.

What does safeguarding mean to me: “To me, safeguarding means keeping an eye out for what might be happening to vulnerable people.”

Partnership working: “I work in partnership with staff from support provider, Choice Support, so our tenants can live safely without harm or abuse.”

Professional curiosity: “Professional curiosity or respectful nosiness means non-judgment. We have to feel and recognise, risk and enquire deeper, whilst being open-minded through questions and visits. In a nutshell, the key to safeguarding is to fully explore, seek individual confirmation, asking relevant questions, and being brave.”

RWP housing officer Sarah shares why working in partnership with a variety of organisations helps to keep tenants safe.

What does safeguarding mean to me: “To keep tenants safe, I work with the local authority’s clinical commissioning group, police, and care providers, family and friends. This means anybody who comes into contact with the tenant. I come into contact with vulnerable tenants on a daily basis.

Part of my role is obviously to look at any safeguarding concerns that I have and to keep people safe from harm, abuse and/or neglect.

Partnership working: “I work with various organisations to prevent risks and to promote people's well-being and have regard for their views.”

What does professional curiosity mean to you: “Professional curiosity to me means combining a few areas – looking, listening, asking direct questions and acting on information to identify any risks. It is not making assumptions or accepting things at face value and having quite difficult conversations.”

Annette, Operations Director at RWP, shares why it is important to investigate our concerns and not to make assumptions.

What does safeguarding mean to me: “to keep all of our tenants free from harm, neglect, and abuse.

Partnership working: “We work with commissioners, support providers, and tenants to keep all tenants safe from harm and neglect.

What does professional curiosity mean to you: “Professional curiosity is acting and asking questions if we feel something is not right. If we are out and about and we see something that concerns us we should investigate it and not just assume that someone else will deal with it. We can do that in a respectful way when speaking to people and we can act in a way that does not infringe on people’s privacy and do this tactfully. It is important if something does not feel right that we investigate.”
