Latest news
Public transport can help you to visit family, friends, explore new places, and get to work. Here we share our top tips on how to stay safe on public transport.
Whether you travel by bus, train, or taxi, it is important you know how to stay safe and avoid putting yourself at risk of danger or harm.
Here are some tips on staying safe:
Bus: Sit where you can be seen by the driver, so either close to the drive or downstairs on a double-decker bus.
Train: Try to sit in busier carriages, and avoid sitting in an empty carriage on trains.
Taxis: Try to book a taxi in advance by phone or online, so you can make sure it is a licensed, insured driver in a licensed, insured vehicle.
If you get a taxi from a taxi rank, take note of or take a picture of the vehicle's number plate and licence number.
Reporting a transport crime
If someone is behaving in way that is worrying you or someone else and makes you feel unsafe, report it to the British Transport Police or a member of rail staff. Call the BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016
If you have no phone signal and can’t find a police officer or member of staff, you can use a station help point. You can usually find station help points on station platforms or the station concourse.
