Staying safe with Christmas lights

It is important to make sure that Christmas lights are in working order and safe.

Decorating your home with lights can be a great way to celebrate Christmas and the festive period. There might be lights on your Christmas tree or in your windows to brighten up your home.

It is important to make sure that the lights are in working order and safe. Here are some tips:

Make sure you switch off your lights before going to bed or leaving your home.

Only use lights inside your home that have been made for indoor use. It will say on your lights packaging if they can be used inside.

Try to not use extension leads with lots of plug sockets. Using lots of plug sockets on an extension lead can stop your electric working or risk causing a fire.

Check your lights are not broken and the wires are not damaged before using them

Keep lights away from decorations that are at more risk of catching fire

Candle safety

Use candles that are powered with batteries instead of real candles. There will be a lower risk of a fire starting and candles with batteries will not add smoke to your home.
